The STEP ASIA Conference 2021 was held virtually during 16-18 November 2021. The annual event stands one of the largest estate and trust conferences in Asia. This year’s topics centered around asset structuring with a focus on simplicity, sustainability and stability, the issues facing stakeholders in this sphere and practical ways in which to overcome them.
Jonathan Blaine (Thailand Tax Director and Co-Head of Regional Compliance & Investigations and Restructuring & Insolvency Practice) delivered a presentation on “Investment Treaties and Free Trade Agreements – Why are they relevant for private clients investing in Southeast Asia?” which took place on 17 November 2021.
Jonathan focused on the importance of investment treaties and free trade agreements (“FTAs”) for private clients investing in Southeast Asia. This included how they can be incorporated into the ownership structure of entities in such a manner as to fully benefit from any relevant trade and commercial provisions within such FTAs along with potential impacts they may exert on family business planning and succession processes.
The entire conference was a great success, appreciated by and which offered tremendous insights to those in attendance.
