A Closer Look: Employee Retirement Under Lao Law | 29 March 2018 | Vientiane

DFDL’s Danyel Thomson, Head of our Regional Employment Practice Group spoke with an engaged audience in Vientiane, Laos on March 29 about Retirement under Lao Law. The key topics under discussion centered upon employer obligations when an employee retires; whether employers can legally implement a compulsory retirement age; calculation of the retirement benefit set out in the law; and whether the employer or the social security organization is responsible for retirement payments. Danyel engaged attendees in a set of multiple choice questions on the seminar topics which generated good discussion and debate.  


In November 2017, we will delve into the Lao labor framework, its relevant legislation, and guidance from the labor authorities on topics concerning the core aspects of employment relationships in the Lao PDR. One of the key topics will feature, employee retirement. As a continuation of our “A Closer Look” series, we shall discuss retirement and its various legal aspects in more expansive detail at this seminar.

Our speaker will analyze and expand upon Lao Labor Law provisions concerning retirement, age limitations, and payouts.

Important topics to includes:

  • Employer obligations when an employee retires;
  • Whether employers can legally implement a compulsory retirement age;
  • Calculation of the retirement benefit set out in the law; and 
  • Whether the employer or the social security organization is responsible for retirement payments.

Our Head of Regional Employment Practice Group, Danyel Thomson, will discuss these topics. The discussions will be followed by a Q&A session where all attendees will have the opportunity to raise any queries and concerns on retirement issues, and have them suitably addressed. This seminar will be of particular interest to all types of employers, whether they be private enterprises, embassies, international organizations, or INGOs operating in the Lao PDR.
