Myanmar – Reforms, Opportunities & Risks For Foreign Investors

On 29 May 2020, DFDL Myanmar and Control Risks hosted a well-attended webinar on Reforms, Opportunities and Risks for Foreign Investors in Myanmar.

Our team of experts featured William Greenlee (Partner and Managing Director, DFDL Myanmar/Singapore), Bhawna Bakshi (Legal Adviser, DFDL Myanmar), Daniel Patton (Director of Business Intelligence, Control Risks) and Thiha Maung Maung (Associate Analyst, Control Risks). Together they discussed the government’s economic reforms, opportunities for foreign investors and the associated challenges and risks involved when doing business within the country.

The speeches by William and Bhawna primarily focused on the legal side of investing with an overview of key investment laws and licenses and outlined some sector-specific liberalization (banking, retail, wholesale, stock exchange and insurance). They went on to discuss the new insolvency law and its rules and provided an overview of sectors that are currently worth investing in such as solar energy, oil, gas, manufacturing and real estate. Daniel and Thiha closed out the speeches for this live event by giving insightful updates on the present political environment with upcoming elections due in November 2020 and the risks still posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The webinar concluded with an active and insightful Q&A session. The audience gained valuable knowledge on what investors should do and look out for to succeed in this market and ways in which foreign companies can mitigate and manage their risks in the Myanmar market.
