On the 3 July 2019, Eurocham Myanmar released its very first podcast featuring DFDL’s Bhawna Bakshi (Legal Advisor) and Rohan Bishayee (Legal Advisor) along with Tax AG Officer, Pablo Galvez. In this podcast Bhawna and Rohan run through some of the key legal and tax issues of particular interest to investors wishing to do business in this largely untapped market abounding with opportunities and millions of potential new customers. This includes discussion of the changes brought about by the new Myanmar Companies Law and a loosening of restrictions on foreign investment participation in certain segments of the economy such as the insurance, finance, wholesale and retail sectors. Bhawna and Rohan outline are some of some of the key forms of commercial entity in Myanmar that foreign investors can use. These include wholly-owned local subsidiaries or joint ventures with Myanmar partners along with the capitalization requirements for each. Also discussed are the key challenges and obstacles faced by foreign investors in Myanmar and the best ways to navigate them.
