When: 3-4 October
Where: Bangkok, Thailand
Angus Mitchell and David Doran will sit as judges at the 9th LAWASIA International Moot Competition in Bangkok at Chulalongkorn University. LAWASIA is an international organization founded in 1966 of lawyers’ associations, individual lawyers, judges, and legal academics that focus on the legal profession in the most dynamic economic region in the world – Asia Pacific.
Mooting is an extracurricular activity at many law schools that simulate court proceedings. It is a sort of systematic training of essential skills in problem solving, legal analysis, drafting legal submissions and development of public speaking for prospective lawyers (law students). Students typically spend a semester researching and writing memos and another semester practicing their oral arguments. International moot competitions focus mostly on public international law, international human rights law and international humanitarian law.
This year’s LAWASIA Moot challenges students to argue whether a large number of claimants would be allowed to bring an action together in a single arbitration. The case was inspired by a factory collapse in Bangladesh, which killed more than 1,000 people and injured another 2,500.
