Congratulations to the EMI team working on the Xayaburi project.

Recently we were awarded the ASIAN-MENA COUNSEL’s Deal of the Year 2012 for this project. Please download the article here.

The article describes the scope of the project and the fact that “the project won acclaim for the ingenuity and perserverence that was needed to bring it to its conclusion”.

The hydroelectric Xayaburi dam project is the first of its kind to be built on the mainstream of the lower Mekong River. The project involves the construction of a 1,285 MW hydropower station in Laos generating enough electricity to also export to Thailand. Although the official dam operating concessions were granted, there are a lot of concerns from various groups regarding biodiversity and the ecosystem further downriver in Cambodia and Vietnam.

We act as legal advisers in relation to project financing for the Xayaburi Lenders (together with Chandler & Thong-ek and Latham & Watkins) that include the Siam Commercial Bank Public Company Limited, Bangkok Bank Public Company Limited, Krung Thai Bank Public Company Limited and Kasikornbank Public Company Limited. The total deal value is approximately USD 3 billion.

The ASIAN-MENA COUNSEL magazine shows the winners and the honorably mentioned deals for the past year. The deals selected closed during the period of November 2011 to December 2012 and made it on the shortlist based on their complexity, uniqueness, size and innovation, are very varied. The list represents projects from the fields of M&A, energy, IPO and Islamic finance.

The ASIAN-MEAN COUNSEL Deals of the Year award is now in its eighth year and continues to recognize outstanding transactions in the region.

The ASIAN-MENA COUNSEL magazine is published 10 times a year by the founders of The In-House Community, a community for in-house lawyers in Asia-Pacific and beyond, and is distributed to 20,000 individuals.
